Department For Education Retention Scheme For Maths Teachers

In April 2018, the Department for Education (DfE) launched a new scheme that allowed eligible teachers to apply for early-career payments.

The scheme will continue to be available to teachers starting their initial teacher training (ITT) in the upcoming 2019/20 academic year. Those eligible will receive early-career payments of £5,000 in their third and fifth year of teaching.

Those who are teaching in certain local authorities will also receive a further payment of an additional £2,500.

The early-career payments will be in addition to the £20,000 bursary, or £22,000 scholarship during ITT.

To be eligible for the early-career payments, teachers must meet the training, employment, and subject and performance criteria. For a full outline of the eligibility criteria and further information, please visit:

Emma Rennison, Executive Director of the Outwood Institute of Education, said: “The teacher retention scheme launched by the DfE will hopefully support more people to stay in teaching after completing their ITT”.
